Your adoption questions answered!

Here are some frequently asked questions to assist you in your search.

When will I receive my adoption?

For E-adoptions you will receive your certificate directly to your email address as soon as your order is finalised. For Adoption Packs please allow up to 10 business days after payment has been processed for Australian delivery, and up to four weeks for overseas delivery.

How long does my koala adoption last?

Koala adoptions last for 12 months. After 12 months we will email you with a reminder that your adoption period is ending and tell you how you can renew your adoption if you wish to do so.

I am buying an adoption as a gift, will it be sent to me?

You can choose to send an E-adoption certificate or Adoption Pack to your address or directly to the recipient.

Will I receive updates on my adopted koala?

At this stage we do not send out individual updates on koalas that are adopted. However, we do regularly post about our permanent resident koalas and temporary patients on our social media pages.

Can I visit my adopted koala?

Yes, if you have adopted one of our permanent resident koalas. Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is open daily from 8:30am to 4pm, seven days a week (closed on Christmas Day).

I have not received my koala adoption pack?

If you have not received your Adoption Pack after 10 business days within Australia, or 4 weeks outside Australia, please email us at or call us on (02) 6584 1522. Please advise of the email address used when the order was placed. If you have ordered an E-adoption please also check your junk/spam mail folder.

How many people can adopt a koala?

There is no limit to the number of people who can adopt a koala. Families, businesses, sports clubs etc. can all adopt the same koala.

Can I adopt more than one koala?

Yes, you can adopt as many koalas as you wish.

Does my money go directly to the koala I am adopting?

Your adoption supports all koalas across our Hospital, including your adopted koala. It is challenging and expensive to administer support for your chosen koala alone, and this way you also get to support the koalas that do not receive as much adoption support.

What is the money used for?

Funds raised through our koala adoption program are used to provide support for all the koalas at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. As well as providing the best possible home for our koalas, we also contribute to research and education programs around Australia; assisting with the conservation, breeding and conservation of koalas and their habitats.

Can I change my koala?

A koala adoption lasts for 12 months and we are unable to change your adopted koala within this period. After your 12 month adoption period you can adopt your chosen koala again or change to one of our other koalas available for adoption.

Is my koala adoption tax deductible?

Adoptions are tax deductible for Australian Tax Residents only.

Can I cancel my adoption?

A koala adoption lasts for 12 months and is not automatically renewed. Under our Refunds Policy we cannot give refunds for cancellations part way through the year.

Is my adoption automatically renewed each year?

No, your adoption is not automatically renewed. Approximately 3 weeks prior to the anniversary of your adoption you will be sent an email reminder that your adoption is due for renewal. It is your choice whether or not you renew your adoption.

I am moving house, where can I update my details?

Please email with your details. Alternatively, you can call us on (02) 6584 1522.

Can I use my adoption for promotional purposes?

Koala adoptions are for personal use however, we have no objection to you posting your adoption certificate on your social media pages.

Here's how you can help!

There are ways for you to help us slow the impact of these threats. Here are three of the biggest, most significant ways you can help us today!

  • Adopt

Adoption is a meaningful and symbolic way to contribute to the conservation of koalas. Adoption allows you to directly fund koala rescue, management of sick and injured koalas and the rehabilitation of koalas and their habitat. Learn about our available adoptees to find who you connect with here!

  • Donate

Making a donation contributes directly to the funding of conservation efforts of wild koalas and their habitats, providing care to sick and injured koalas and supporting research and education efforts. Donating is an easy and effective way to directly help our Koala population, a little goes a long way.

  • Visit

Come see us in action to find out what we’re all about!
