Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) is hosting the third National Koala Conference 26-28 May. The conference brings together university researchers, wildlife veterinarians and vet nurses, wildlife carers, government agencies, ecologists, policy makers, zookeepers and interested members of the public for three days to hear the latest in koala conservation.

50 speakers, all leaders in their field, will cover a wide array of topics involved in the conservation of koalas. This includes: the effects of climate change on koala populations, pharmacokinetics, tree choice, behaviour, stress hormones, koala genomics and koala milk, immunogenetic structure of populations, microbiomes, chlamydia vaccine, antibiotic resistant bacteria, nutritional status of eucalypts post fires, oxalate nephrosis, retrovirus and much more!

CSIRO will host a workshop for all conference participants, on the Federal Government’s monitoring programme on Friday afternoon.

A highlight of the conference will be poster presentations plus stands covering such things as the NSW Koala Strategy, International Fund for Animal Welfare’s work and the Koala Smart programme for schools.
The conference provides a unique opportunity to be updated on current research and meet and chat with leading koala people from across Australia.

Robyn Williams, a well-known and respected science broadcaster and host of the long running radio national program,The Science Show, will provide the dinner entertainment as he is interviewed by ABC broadcaster, Gregg Borschmann on Saturday evening, 27th May.  Robyn has seen the world – he understands and will comment on how the planet and global ecosystems are changing dramatically. We will also be announcing Koala Conservation Australia’s Golden Leaf Awards of Excellence (the academy awards of koala conservation).

While in the area delegates can visit any number of excellent destinations, many within walking distance of the conference venue, Panthers.

We are looking forward to welcoming you and remember, as the conference theme says, “Their future is in our hands”.
