Adopt Settlement Point Bea
On 10 September 2008, the Koala Hospital received a call that a young joey had fallen around 20 metres from her mother’s pouch and was lying still on some rocks at the edge of the Hastings River at Settlement Point. The mother, who appeared to have a severe case of ‘wet bottom’, was too high for rescuers to reach, but the joey was quickly placed in a warm artificial pouch and brought to the Hospital for treatment. Weighing only 445 grams, the joey (who was named Settlement Point Bea) was uninjured by the fall. However, her general body condition was poor and, like her mother, she was emitting a strong ‘wet bottom’ smell. Bea went straight into home care where she received nutritional supplements and round-the-clock care. She gradually gained weight and transformed from a skinny brown-coated, little animal into a chubby, healthy joey with a fluffy grey coat. Bea looked set to follow the path of other home-reared joeys by moving into the Hospital’s dehumanising yard prior to her release. But this was not to be...instead Bea found herself a resident at the Koala Hospital.
